Running LTspice IV on Mac OS X
Before I start testing a new idea for an electronic circuit and building it on a breadboard, I usually want to check it with LTspice. It’s a fantastic piece of software for testing almost any kind of component. Nearly all manufacturers have a spice equivalent for most of their parts. But there’s a snag. The Mac version of LTspice is a piece of crap. Having to run a virtual PC or reboot using BootCamp feels unnecessarily slow and convoluted. But there’s a way of running it as a “normal” Mac application. Here’s how to do it.
WineBottler
Click the Download Free Trial button above and get a 14-day, fully-functional trial of CrossOver. After you've downloaded CrossOver check out our YouTube tutorial video to the left, or visit the CrossOver Mac walkthrough for specific steps.
WineBottler is an app that uses the Wine Windows compatibility layer, so it’s not an emulator and is fast. It creates standalone applications and includes everything needed for Wine to work. So you’ll have a double-clickable program in your application folder. There is a commercial version of Wine for Mac called CrossOver, but for me, WineBottler works excellent.
Not all Windows applications are compatible in Wine, but LTspice IV works like a charm. Download WineBottler here.
Installing LTspice IV on Mac with WineBottler
Ltspice Iv Manual Pdf
Start WineBottler. The initial screen shows some preconfigured applications that are available. Press the button Advanced.
Go to Linear Technology’s homepage and download the Windows version of LTspice IV. There’s a Mac version, but a lot of stuff is missing and is horrible.
In WineBottler, leave all the default settings under Advanced and press “Select file…” under Programs to install.
Now you only have to press the Install button, and WineBottler does it’s thing. Save the app in your Applications folder for easy access.
And here you have it, LTspice IV running as a separate application on your Mac! Yay!

#119195 Hi I tried to install Ltspice on mac OS Catalina. After install I tried to open Ltspice, but sytem says that Ltspice is damaged. I tried 4 times with the same result. Then I noticed that downloaded dmg file is about 88MB in size, but opened installer shows only 42MB of content. Tried several times with the same result. My guess is that install file on the server is already damaged. Any help? 28.03.2020 |
#119196 I read in another message today that the latest Mac version of LTspice might be corrupt. Send feedback to Analog Devices. The email for LTspice support is LTspice (at) analog.com. You could also try using the 'Feedback' link on the Analog Devices webpage (the website feedback goes to different people). I don't have access to a Mac. Andy |
#119220 I have an LTspice.dmg file from 2020-02-16 which is 103.8 MB. I have since updated to the 2020-03-18 release which works correctly. When I download the current release file from the AD website it is only 50.9 MB. Moderators, is it OK if I upload the older LTspice image file I have to the Files/Temp area? |
#119221 Hello Dennis, You can upload this dmg-file to the Temp-folder. We will keep it until ADI has fixed the problem. Helmut |
#119222 I tried to upload the image but I got an error saying the file was too large. :-( I have copied it to dropbox, and I can give users a link to that file at https://www.dropbox.com/s/4rks2v0i8yema3g/LTspice.dmg?dl=0. You could copy this to the Files area if you aren't constrained by the file size limit. |
#119229 Thanks for the upload. Successfully downloaded, installed and updated. Thanks again. |
#119488 Hi, I had the same issue! However I waited for a week, download the latest version it was there and then I managed to install it without any problem... well, I still have an issue when trying to update the models. Basically it crashes as it tries to update the models and the program closes down. Could you try downloading the last version uploaded this week and see if you can install it? Also, could you please try and update the models and see if you also have the same issue? I've reported the issue to Analog devices, I'll let you know when they reply. Best regards, Marcos |
#119489 Hi, I forgot to say that I still use Mojave, but the problem was the same with Mojave the week you reported your issue. Marcos |
#119497 Edited Hello, I just did a 'Model-Update' in MAC-LTspice. It downloaded all files of the power-ICs. This tooks a long time, but it successfully finished. I have MAC-LTspice version 'Mar 18 2020' on MAC-Catalina. I intentionally didn't update the program. Helmut |
