If you’re on a low-bandwidth or spotty internet connection, sometimes it’s easier to download a TEDTalk than to watch online through our streaming video player. This week we’ve rolled out two new ways to find and download our smallest, lightest — but still very crisp and watchable — video files for your favorite talks.

First, we’ve added the “Low-res video (MP4)” option on every Talk page. Clicking on the small “Download” button below the video player (circled in the graphic above) brings up this menu of options, which also include our regular-size download and our ultra-crisp but larger 480p high-res file.

Second, we’ve built this lightweight, text-only Quick List to let you bypass the individual Talk page and download a bunch of talks at once. The Quick List contains every downloadable TEDTalk in low, regular and high def. (If you’re curious why the number at the top of this list isn’t 1,000+, our Best of the Web series is streaming only. You won’t find Steve Jobs or JK Rowling on the Quick List, but you can watch them online anytime right here.)

TED, the abbreviation that stands for Technology, Entertainment and Design is a non-profit organization that works on a single primary goal of aggregating and sharing “Ideas Worth Spreading”. These ideas are shared via their global conferences called TED Talks which gives a platform to visionaries in diverse fields to spread their creative ideas to the world.

Of course watching these amazing stage talks online is very inspiring but if you are looking for a way to download these videos to your hard disk drive in order to play them to your kids or relatives, then here are the two recommended methods.

Download Via Official TED Website

If you wish to download one or two TED videos now and then, and have a good broadband speed, then you can do so directly from their official website. You must open the page of the particular video you wish to download and click on the download button located just below the web player.

As soon as you click the download button you will be asked to select the download quality and the video file type. Make your desired choice and click on the download link to start the download.

This method is feasible only if you have one or two videos to download as you need to open each video page individually and click on the download button. If you wish to batch download TED videos you can use TED Talks Downloader which we will be discussing next.

Use TED Talks Downloader

Download the latest version of the portable tool called TED Talks Downloader and run it. The application is self-explanatory and easy to use. Select the download quality along with the download folder and click on Update Links. The program will now fetch the details of all the videos of that particular quality that are available.

Check mark all the videos you wish to download and click on Get Ted Talks. The program will instantly start downloading all the videos you have selected.

My Verdict

The first method is absolutely fine if one needs to download a couple of videos but when it comes to downloading TED videos in bulk, the downloader is preferable but it isn’t without its shortcomings.

As we all know TED has hosted around thousands of videos and thus selecting few of them one by one in the downloader can be a pain. If the developer comes up with a search or a category filter, it will be a major advantage to the users.

Also the program lags pause/resume function and thus you cannot leave your system plugged in in the middle of a download.
